The photo at left was taken by a student (Chase Damiano) in Holden Hall during the Virginia Tech massacre. Holden Hall is adjacent to Norris Hall where the tragedy occured. With extreme danger next door in a connecting building, these students chose to sit in a corner in an unsecured environment. Why? Because the only response they have been taught since they started school is to sit and wait for law enforcement. That is not enough. LOCKDOWN is a tool, but it cannot be the only tool. You cannot expect just one strategy to be the safety solution to all the variables involved in these events.
If people in a mall, church, hospital, or any workplace are advised to do whatever it takes to survive, why in Schools do we only tell our children to sit passively and wait for rescue? Especially when that strategy has been tragically defeated so many times.
Response Options specializes in preparing our communities in how to respond to a Violent Attack on large numbers of people. We train potential victims in strategies designed to increase their odds of survival. These strategies are compatible with each of the natural reactions to danger, Flight ... Fight ... and Freeze.
Our A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate)
program is a comprehensive approach, advocating integrated strategies incorporating Environmental Design, Technology & Communication, Law Enforcement Response, and the oft missing link - ACTION by those in immediate danger because they are the real First Responders.
Our Solo-Engagement Tactics Course fosters the winning mindset and provides strategies and skills that will allow the first-on-scene officer to make an impact without wasting precious seconds, or minutes, waiting for help. Those under attack need help more.
We teach Common Sense that isn't Common Knowledge.
