Preparing for the day that is NOT like yesterday ...

The montage above is an exerpt of page 24 of the newly released (2010) document “Guide for Preventing and Responding to School Violence”. This manual is produced by the International Association of Chiefs of Police through funding by the US Department of Justice. A link to the document is available in the left sidebar.

These "new" recommendations DISMISS a single strategy response by those under attack. They DO include all of the concepts Response Options has been promoting for many years to enhance the traditional response to danger of LOCKDOWN, including: providing real-time information so that persons under attack can make an informed decision as to their best option; escaping or evacuating whenever and however it can be done; and even the last resort action of effective Counter Strategies which they term Active Resistance. Years ago this organization was critized by "experts" for our "radical and ill-advised" recommendations. Will they now also ridicule the US Dept of Justice and the International Chiefs of Police? Or the now numerous other organizations who are also recommending proactive response to dangerous situations?

Providing those in immediate danger with ability, authority, and information, so that they may make a good decision in the moment is only common sense. And it has always been the basis of our A.L.I.C.E. program. But knowing the Where?, When?, and What? of a proper response does not answer How? This requires some specific, but easy and effective, strategies.

Response Options specializes in preparing our communities in how to respond to a Violent Attack on large numbers of people. We train potential victims in strategies designed to increase their odds of survival. These strategies are compatible with each of the natural reactions to danger, Flight ... Fight ... and Freeze.

Our A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) program is a comprehensive approach, advocating integrated strategies incorporating Environmental Design, Technology & Communication, Law Enforcement Response, and the oft missing link - ACTION by those in immediate danger because they are the real First Responders.

Our Solo-Engagement Tactics Course fosters the winning mindset and provides strategies and skills that will allow the first-on-scene officer to make an impact without wasting precious seconds, or minutes, waiting for help. Those under attack need help more.

We teach Common Sense that isn't Common Knowledge.
